The City of my Dreams
by Alex Shymansky

Usually when my friends talk about their dream city, they describe a comfortable small town by the sea – a kind of tropical paradise where there is more time for rest than for work.

Travel agencies often propose that we leave behind this “hell” and discover the idyllic corners of our planet. Places like Brazil, Florida, Cuba and Australia are often advertized as places that we need to visit at least once in our lifetime.

But, are these places really paradise? Are they where everyone should seek to live? To tell you the truth, I am not convinced because if this were so there would not be many Brazilian, Cuban, Italian and French immigrants here in Canada. People leave the U.S. to come to Canada and emigrate from Europe and New Zealand to Australia and Dubai and vice versa.

It seems that the ideal place to live doesn’t exist here on earth. Of course, this doesn’t mean that it doesn’t exist at all. I am a Christian and I believe that the city of my dreams does exist. It is the city that the Bible refers to as “a city where there is no night... it is the city where God will wipe away the tears from our eyes... the city where there will be no death, no mourning , no weeping, no pain” (Rev. 21:4 Open in New Window; 22:5 Open in New Window).

This is the city of my dreams.
