B.Y.O.B. (Bring Your Own Bible)

I was told that someone removed from the shelf in the teenage classroom all of the Bibles. The Bibles were replaced with a note issuing a stern warning that students in Bible classes should B.Y.O.B. (bring your own Bible). That's an interesting way to make a point, and it makes a very good point. We often study and worship, and this is true of both youth and adults.
No soldier would go into battle without his weapon (sword), so why do we so often go into battle without the sword of the Spirit (...

A Home Without a Bible?

What would your home be like without a Bible? Would it be just as it is now, or would it be very different?
What is a home without a Bible?
'Tis a home where day is night.
Starless night, for o'er life's path,
Heaven can shed no kindly light.
What is a home without a Bible?
'Tis a home where daily bread
For the body is provided,
But the soul is never fed.
What is a home without a Bible?
'Tis a family out at sea,
Compass lost and rudder broken,
Drifting, drifting, thoughtlessly.

The Code of Hammurabi and the Bible

The Code of Hammurabi, was discovered by a French archaeological expedition under the direction of Jacques de Morgan in 1901-1902 at the ancient site of Susa in what is now Iran. It was written on a piece of black diorite, 2.25 m (7 ft. 5 in.) in height, and contained 282 sections. Although the block was broken into three pieces, the major portion of it has been restored and is now in the Louvre in Paris.
Many scholars believe that the code is actually a series of amendments to the common law o...

Why Was the Bible Written?

Writers have a purpose for writing. One may write to inform, entertain, oppose, expose, persuade or to preserve facts. Why was the Bible written? In this study, we shall seek to answer that question. Our opinion as to the Bible's purpose is not valid or sufficient (Isa. 55:8,9). Accordingly, we shall let God, the Holy Spirit, tell us why it was given unto man (1 Cor. 2:6-16). If we know why the Bible was written, we shall know how to use it more effectively (2 Tim. 2:15). Dr. Seuss and Mother Go...

Archaeology and the New Testament

Any time a book alleges to report historical events accurately, that book potentially opens itself up to an immense amount of criticism. If such a book claims to be free from all errors in its historical documentation, the criticism frequently becomes even more intense. But such should be the case, for it is the responsibility of present and future generations to know and understand the past, and to insist that history, including certain monumental moments, is recorded and related as accurately ...

Archaeology and the Old Testament

A man wearing a leather vest and a broad-rimmed hat wraps a ripped piece of cloth around an old bone, sets it on fire, and uses it as a torch to see his way through ancient tunnels filled with bones, rats, bugs, and buried treasure. Close behind him lurks the dastardly villain, ready to pounce on the treasure after the hero has done all the planning and dangerous work. We have seen this scenario, or others similar to it, time and again in movies like Indiana Jones or The Mummy. And although we u...

Chronology and the Bible's Arrangement

Since the Bible begins at the Creation with Genesis—the book of beginnings—and ends with the book of Revelation (which many scholars believe was the last recorded book of the Bible), students of the Scriptures often assume that the Bible was compiled chronologically. Many students approach their reading of the Bible with the mindset that everything in Scripture is arranged "from A to Z." Since Genesis records what took place at the beginning of time, and it is the first book of the B...

Do Christians Need "Additional Scripture"?

For many people who claim to be Christians, the Bible is not enough. Supposedly, it is not sufficient revelation. It does not give us enough information. These individuals seek additional works of inspiration. Either they want direct revelation from the Holy Spirit, or they want some kind of additional inspired work from God. In a recent Bible study with two gentlemen who claimed to believe in the divine inspiration of both the Bible and the Book of Mormon, one of the men made the statement: "Go...

In Defense of the Bible's Inspiration: Part II

The factual accuracy of the Bible
The Bible claims to be the inspired Word of God. Therefore, it should be accurate in whatever subject(s) it discusses, since God is not the Author of confusion and contradiction (1 Corinthians 14:33), but of truth (John 17:17). The factual accuracy of the Bible proves that it is accurate. Time and again the Bible’s facts have withstood the test. Examples abound.
Numerous passages indicate that Moses wrote the Pentateuch (2 Chronicles 34:14; Ezra 6:18; Ne...

Knowledge and truth are precious commodities. As a body of factual information and legitimate principles, knowledge is indispensable in human relationships. Truth, as knowledge justifiably believed, represents a fundamental reality that transcends both the provincial and the temporal. Most people are desirous of obtaining a certain amount of knowledge that they then can put to good use in their everyday lives. And, undoubtedly, most people prefer not be deceived, but instead prefer to be dealt w...

World's Largest Bible

The world record for the largest Bible is a copy of the King James Bible that was created by carpenter Louis Waynai from Los Angeles, CA in 1930.
Louis Waynai devoted two years and $10,000 to put this Bible together. He began this task December 2, 1928, and finished it December 1, 1930. He used a large home-made rubber stamp press to print the book. The Bible is 43.5 inches tall and 98 inches wide, when open. Closed, the spine measures 34 inches thick. The Waynai Bible weighs 1,094 pounds and c...

On Using Book, Chapter, and Verse

In the last few years, an increasingly popular sentiment has arisen in the Lord’s church which maintains that the explicit citation of Bible book, chapter, and verse in pulpit proclamation (or in Bible class teaching) is somehow unsophisticated, ineffective, or inappropriate.
With this emerging mentality has come a dramatic reduction in both the amount of scripture incorporated into Bible teaching from the pulpit and the extent to which subject matter is derived directly from biblical tex...

The Value of Old Testament Study

Several NewTestament passages teach the temporary design of the Old Testament system (the Law of Moses), and the fact that the new covenant of Christ superseded the Old (Col. 2:14; Eph. 2:14-15; Gal. 3:23-25; Rom. 7:1-6; Heb. 6:12; 9:15-17).
If the Old Testament has been abrogated, why should a person be concerned with studying it? This is a question pondered by many sincere people, and it deserves a response. This caution, however, must be noted. In arguing the temporary status of the Old Test...

His reply was, “I really haven’t, because even if it’s the thousandth time I’ve been asked a question, it’s the first time the person asking it has ever heard the answer.”
And so it is with the preaching and teaching of God’s word. No matter how many times this writer preaches or teaches from the Bible, there’s always someone present who hasn’t h...

Why Study the Bible?

The primary reason for studying the Bible is because it is a command from God (2 Timothy 2:15). The following are additional reasons as to why we should study the Bible:

That we may live spiritually by being born anew by God’s word (cf. Luke 8:11; 1 Peter 1:23). Unless one is born anew, he cannot enter the kingdom of heaven (John 3:1-5).

That we may grow spiritually (1 Peter 2:1-2; 2 Peter 3:18).

That we may be able to resist the darts and arrows of Satan as our Lo...

Ten Bible Study Attitudes

One of the most prevalent causes of misunderstanding the Bible is that the student fails to approach the Bible with the “right attitude.” In this way, God’s method of teaching him the truth is thwarted from the very beginning. This is the very problem Jesus faced as He began His ministry among men. After His famous parable of the sower (Matthew 13:1-9), the disciples asked why He had used this method (Matthew 13:10).
The reply of Jesus indicated that the parable method was use...

Does Human Fallibility Imply a Fallible Bible?

Humanity is broken. Few would deny the biblical affirmation: “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). All people stand in need of redemption and are incapable of currying God's favor by their own imperfect efforts (Ephesians 2:3-9; Galatians 3:22). Even for those who “walk in the light” (1 John 1:7) personal sin remains a reality (1 John 1:10-2:1). The question, “Are Christians sinners who are forgiven or saints who sin?,” bespeaks t...

From God’s Mind to Man – The Bible

In the long-ago biblical ages, there were occasions when God spoke personally to men (Gen. 3:9; 12:1ff; cf. Heb. 1:1). That method of communication is not operative today. Eventually, the Lord had his will committed to written documents (collectively known a the Bible). These literary narratives can be investigated and verified, thus establishing their claims of divine origin. There is a sense in which written revelation transcends miraculous communication (see 1 Cor. 13:9-12).
There are three ...

The following poem by an unknown author illustrates the fact that the Bible is read by folks who have different motives for reading it. However, very few read it for the purpose of obeying its precepts (cf. Matthew 7:21; Luke 6:46; John 12:48; Romans 6:17; Hebrews 5:8-9; 1 Peter 1:18-22; James 1:22-25).

“Give me the Bible, star of gladness gleaming (2 Peter 1:19),
To cheer the wand’rer lone and tempest tossed (Isaiah 54:11);
No storm can hide that radiance peaceful beaming (Mark 4:36-41),
